Gender Approach

What if.....

Every famous movie that we watched experience gender-bender?!

naaahhhh, it is going to be weird! They will not look appropriate!

Then, why is this so cute?!

This too!

With the representation of the image itself give you an insight of what we are going to share today. Yes! The one and only gender approach. So what is gender approach?

This approach “examines how sexual identity influences the creation and reception of literary works.” However, this approach is always related to feminism because of the way society is structured by men and thus, creating a patriarchal rule that heavily favours men – which is an unfortunate thing for the women. This results in emergence of some issues like women empowerment, docility of women and etc.
So, how can this approach help the students to understand better?
As teachers, we can guide them by looking at the aspect of language use; such as how the visual images of men and women in the text reflect the stereotypical of gender roles. Apart from that, in the language-based approach for example, we can also ask the students' feelings and opinions about the literary text, by connecting the themes of a text and his or her personal life and experiences. The language-based approach and aesthetic approach can be combined together in the activities, but it must emphasize on the gender issue highlighted in the literary text.

Thus, what kind of activities suit the approach? Patience my kings and queens, here are some exquisite suggestions that we have prepared for you:

From the selected video among these two, you can now create several questions to be used in the pre-reading stage, for example:

  1.    Do you still believe in the use of magical power in this modern era?
  2.    From your opinion, which gender in our society tends to be more dominated in the use of magic? State your reason.
  3. Share you experience that is related to the use of magic.

Through this activities, as a teacher you may decide whether to conduct it individually or as a group to make the activity more interesting and communicative. As usual, try it out and do share with us your experience of using this approach in your lit class. Have fun and happy teaching and do not be sexist people!
